Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda visited Mon district in Nagaland on Wednesday to interact with families affected by the recent landslides and flash floods. Nadda expressed solidarity with the affected families, stating that the incident was ‘very disheartening and painful’ and assured them that they were not alone during the difficult period. The Union Minister assured that the Government of India would leave no stone unturned in supporting relief and restoration efforts and informed the gathering that a central team would visit to assist the relief operations.
He also conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of condolence and solidarity to the families of the victims. Nadda acknowledged the relief initiatives undertaken by the district administration led by Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak, along with the Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong at the emergency relief camps. Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak briefed the Union Minister on the disaster situation in Mon district, stating that incessant heavy rainfall had triggered floods and landslides at several locations, causing extensive damage to roads, bridges and public infrastructure.
Several villages had experienced temporary disruption of road connectivity. Heavy rainfall had triggered multiple landslides across the district, with Defence Colony and adjoining areas among the worst affected. Residential houses had sustained damage, several families had been displaced, road connectivity at multiple stretches had been disrupted, and power and water supply had been temporarily affected in certain locations.
Relief camps and temporary shelters had been established where required, while food grains, drinking water, medicines and other essential commodities were being distributed to affected families. Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak expressed gratitude to the Union Minister and his team for visiting the district, saying that their visit conveyed the message that Mon was not alone in its darkest hour. Incessant monsoon rainfall on July 19 and 20 had triggered catastrophic landslides and flash floods across Mon district, resulting in loss of life, widespread destruction of homes, severe agricultural losses and total blockage of critical connectivity arterial routes.
According to the data from the Automatic Weather Station, Mon headquarters had recorded 83.95 mm of rainfall on July 19, while cumulative rainfall from July 19 to 31 stood at 341 mm. Video footage of the destruction and affected areas was also screened by the Konyak Union media team. Assistant Manager (Response & Communication), NSDMA, and Nodal Officer (Disaster Management), DDMA Mon, Rendemo Shitio, gave a PowerPoint presentation on the monsoon damage in July 2026 and the post-disaster interim assessment of Mon district and Nagaland.
