Uttar Pradesh’s decision to restore the name of the Bhadohi district to Sant Ravidas Nagar has been welcomed by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati. On Friday, July 31, 2026, Mayawati expressed her appreciation for the move and requested the BJP government to revive the original names of other districts created during the BSP rule. In a statement, Mayawati acknowledged the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to re-establish Sant Ravidas Nagar district, which was initially created by the BSP government.
The BSP chief attributed the name change by the Samajwadi Party (SP) government to its ‘narrow casteist mindset.’ Mayawati highlighted the BSP’s efforts to streamline the administrative system and improve public welfare during its four governments in Uttar Pradesh. She noted that the BSP created new districts, tehsils, development blocks, police zones, and ranges, naming many of them after great saints, gurus, and notable individuals from the Dalit and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The BSP chief criticized the SP government for changing the names of these districts, citing ‘casteist thinking, hatred, and narrow politics.’ Mayawati specifically mentioned districts like Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar and Bhim Nagar, which were also created during the BSP rule.
The BSP chief expressed her hope that the BJP government would revive the original names of these districts, which were changed by the SP government due to its alleged casteist mindset.
