Mirwaiz Demands Probe into PoK Killings

Kashmir chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has demanded a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation into the recent cycle of killings in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). Addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz expressed deep concern over the continuing unrest and tragic loss of lives across the Line of Control, particularly in Rawalakot.

The Mirwaiz led special prayers for those who lost their lives in POK this week and mourned every life lost, whether that of a civilian protester or a member of the police force. He prayed for the speedy recovery of all those injured and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to establish the truth. Mirwaiz also appealed to the Government of Pakistan and the local government across the LoC in J&K to engage sincerely with the representatives of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and with all sections of the people.

Mirwaiz stressed that durable peace and stability can only be achieved through dialogue, constitutional fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of every segment of society. He noted that the recent events across the LoC, particularly in Rawalakot, remind us that the governments may administer territories and advance competing political positions, but it is the people of J&K who remain the true stakeholders of their homeland.

The cleric emphasized that the people of J&K must remain at the centre of every decision affecting their future and that any genuine people’s movement must itself remain inclusive. He also highlighted the importance of respecting the constitutional rights of all sections of the people, including the voting rights and constitutional status of nearly three million Kashmiri refugees and migrants living across the provinces of Pakistan.

At least 30 people were reported killed and dozens injured in two days this week in POK, with locals alleging that security forces opened fire on participants of a long march organised by the JAAC in Rawalakot.
