The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to convene an all-party meeting to build a consensus on the Cauvery issue. CPI leader R.
Mutharasan made this call on Saturday (August 1, 2026), emphasizing the need for a united voice from Tamil Nadu on this critical issue. Mr. Mutharasan pointed out that parties in Karnataka are speaking in a united voice on the Cauvery issue, and it is essential for Tamil Nadu to do the same to avoid different opinions being expressed. He stressed that the all-party meeting should also invite representatives of farmers’ associations to ensure that the State gets its due share of water and blocks efforts by the Karnataka government to construct a dam at Mekedatu.
The CPI leader also highlighted the struggles faced by farmers in Tamil Nadu, particularly during the kuruvai season. He noted that kuruvai cultivation has been badly hit due to inadequate three-phase power supply and rapidly depleting groundwater levels. Mr. Mutharasan urged the State government to provide adequate relief to farmers, who are finding it difficult to cultivate using pump sets.
Mr. Mutharasan emphasized that the Cauvery issue is not a problem faced by a particular party or government in Tamil Nadu, but one that confronts the entire State. He called on the Chief Minister to meet the Prime Minister in New Delhi on behalf of all political parties in Tamil Nadu to ensure that the State gets its due share of water and that the construction of a dam at Mekedatu is blocked. The CPI leader’s call for an all-party meeting comes at a time when the Cauvery issue remains a contentious topic between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
