Delhi Police has filed a First Information Report (FIR) in response to allegedly objectionable and defamatory social media posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to sources, the posts in question were made during protests by the Cockroach Janta Party at Jantar Mantar.
The FIR was lodged at the Special Cell IFSO (Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations) unit, with charges including criminal intimidation, public mischief, and defamation. This development comes after the Delhi Police began requesting social media platforms to remove such content.
In a notice sent to a social media platform, the Delhi Police stated that the circulation of objectionable and defamatory content has caused harm to the Prime Minister’s reputation, dignity, and public image. The notice further emphasized that the continued availability of such content has the potential to disturb public order, create unnecessary controversy, and erode public trust.
The police have identified around 500 social media accounts that allegedly shared deepfake and AI-generated content related to the protests. These accounts have been recommended for blocking through the respective social media platforms.
The protests, which were organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, were initially sparked by the alleged NEET-UG paper leak. The protests were called off on July 25 after the government accepted the party’s demands, including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
However, clashes broke out between Delhi Police personnel and students on July 20, resulting in injuries on both sides. While 15 FIRs were initially registered in connection with the violence, they were subsequently withdrawn. The police are now investigating the possibility of a wider conspiracy.
