Mizoram to receive ₹120 crore under Centre's public health scheme

Mizoram is set to receive ₹120 crore under the Centre’s Financial Assistance to States/UTs for Public Health Infrastructure (FASPHI) scheme for the 2026-27 financial year. Chief Minister Lalduhoma made the announcement during a visit to Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMC&H) in Falkawn on Monday, accompanied by Health Minister Lalrinpuii and Adviser to the Chief Minister TBC Lalvenchhunga.

The FASPHI scheme, implemented during the 16th Finance Commission period, has a total allocation of ₹4,200 crore for 2026-27. It provides performance-based incentives to states and Union Territories based on four indicators: infant mortality rate (IMR), maternal mortality ratio (MMR), tuberculosis mortality rate (TB-MR), and the number of health facilities certified under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS).

Mizoram qualified for incentives under two indicators: infant mortality rate and the proportion of NQAS-certified health facilities. The state’s IMR improved from 13 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2023 to 12 per 1,000 live births in 2024, earning an incentive of ₹20 crore. Additionally, Mizoram recorded a 21.07% increase in NQAS-certified health facilities between 2024-25 and 2025-26, securing the maximum incentive of ₹100 crore under that category.

The approved projects include upgrading Community Health Centres, establishing infectious disease wards, setting up a tuberculosis treatment unit, strengthening tuberculosis diagnostic facilities, and procuring maternal and child healthcare equipment for health institutions across the state. Chief Minister Lalduhoma said the performance-based incentives reflected the state’s progress in implementing public health initiatives and thanked the Health and Family Welfare Department for its efforts.

During the visit, Lalduhoma reviewed the infrastructure and facilities at ZMC&H, which currently has 494 students, including 97 interns. The medical college also provides internship and clinical postings for nursing and laboratory technician students from the Mizoram College of Nursing, RIPANS, and pharmacy colleges in the state.

Eight departments at ZMC&H have received NQAS national certification, and the hospital has added 30 new cabins and expanded its intensive care unit capacity over the past two-and-a-half years. With a total capacity of 519 beds, Zoram Medical College and Hospital is the largest hospital in Mizoram.
