A Bihar policeman has been suspended after a video emerged showing him firing an AK-47 assault rifle in the air during a protest in Siwan on Saturday. The incident occurred during a statewide bandh over the alleged NEET paper leak and recent police action against student protesters, which turned violent and left several people injured.
According to Siwan SP Puran Kumar Jha, a total of eight to 10 rounds were fired during the protests. Jha confirmed that four rounds were fired from long-range weapons and three rounds from pistols by the police. However, the source of the remaining firing is still under investigation.
The violence resulted in three people sustaining bullet injuries, with one of the victims, Bullet Kumar Gond, suffering a gunshot wound to his leg during police firing. Siwan Superintendent of Police Jha was also injured in the clashes, along with several other police personnel.
While the police have confirmed that their personnel fired shots, it is unclear whether all three bullet injuries were caused by police firing. An investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the bullets in all three cases.
The suspended policeman, an SIT officer, was seen firing the AK-47 assault rifle in the air in the video that surfaced. The incident has sparked concerns about the use of force by the police during the protests.
