Vice President C P Radhakrishnan emphasized the significance of public service on Saturday, telling a group of new Rajya Sabha MPs that while elections are won with votes, respect is earned through public service.
The Vice President made these remarks while inaugurating a two-day orientation programme for the newly-elected MPs, where he stressed the need for commitment to the people and the Constitution. As the Rajya Sabha Chairman, he highlighted the importance of dedication to the role of a parliamentarian.
Radhakrishnan noted that the outcome of debates, discussions, and even disruptions should always lead to a decision, underscoring the need for productive engagement in the parliamentary process. He urged members to remember that their actions, including every question asked, every law enacted, every policy framed, and every debate participated in, have the potential to transform lives.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh also addressed the new MPs, stating that they have the right to hold the government accountable, offer constructive criticism, and guide the government onto the right path. This orientation programme aims to equip the newly-elected MPs with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill their roles effectively.
