The flood situation in Assam has shown a marginal improvement, with nearly 6.55 lakh people still affected across six districts. The death toll in this year’s deluge has risen to 66, with four more deaths reported in a day. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three deaths were reported in Sivasagar and one in Charaideo.
The flood-affected districts include Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Sivasagar. Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with nearly 2.9 lakh people reeling under the deluge. Charaideo and Jorhat are also severely affected, with 1.9 lakh and 1.3 lakh people displaced, respectively.
The administration has set up 274 relief camps and aid distribution centres in the six districts, providing care to 18,902 displaced people. The ASDMA’s daily bulletin reports that 810 villages are under water, and 34,970.8 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across Assam. The floods have also damaged river embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.
The Dikhou and the Dhansiri rivers are flowing above the danger level in Sivasagar and Numaligarh, indicating that the situation remains critical.
