Arunachal Pradesh’s first veterinary polyclinic was inaugurated on Thursday at Abotani Colony in Itanagar by Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development Minister Gabriel D Wangsu and Chief Secretary Manish Kumar Gupta.
The modern referral veterinary healthcare facility aims to strengthen animal health services in the Itanagar Capital Region and surrounding areas. The project, which cost Rs 320 lakh, was executed by the Urban Development & Housing Department’s Itanagar division.
The polyclinic is designed to provide a range of specialized veterinary services, including clinical diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases, surgery, emergency care, laboratory diagnostic services, and technical advisory support to livestock farmers and pet owners. It will also play a crucial role in disease surveillance, early detection, and rapid response to animal health emergencies, thereby strengthening the state’s veterinary public health system.
The facility will serve as the state nodal centre for implementing the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme in the capital region, facilitating humane management of stray dog populations in accordance with the ABC Rules, 2023. It will also support compliance with the Supreme Court of India’s directions on addressing the stray dog issue while ensuring animal welfare and public safety.
According to Minister Wangsu, X-ray and ultrasound machines will soon be installed in the polyclinic, which will be operated by qualified doctors. The minister stated that the polyclinic will substantially improve access to quality veterinary services for livestock and companion animals in the region, immensely benefiting pet owners.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by IMC Mayor Likha Nari Tadar, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development Secretary YVVJ Rajasekhar, DIGP Tumme Amo, and officials of the Veterinary and Urban Development Departments.
