Assam Floods Claim 21 Lives in 24 Hours, Death Toll Rises to 31

Assam’s flood situation has taken a devastating turn, with 21 people losing their lives in the past 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 31. The flood situation remains grim in Upper Assam, with most major rivers flowing above the danger level.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s latest flood report, all 21 deaths were caused by floods, with Sivasagar accounting for 13 fatalities, followed by Charaideo (5), Golaghat (2) and Jorhat (1). The victims included 12 men, five women and four children, underscoring the human cost of the disaster.

The floods have now affected 5,64,660 people across 872 villages in 16 districts, while more than 24,210 hectares of cropland remain submerged. Sivasagar has emerged as the worst-hit district, with nearly 3.6 lakh people affected, followed by Jorhat and Charaideo.

The Dikhou and Disang rivers were flowing above the highest flood level at Sivasagar town and Nanglamuraghat, both in Sivasagar district. The Brahmaputra at Nematighat, Burhidihing at Khowang, and the Dhansiri (South) at Golaghat and Numaligarh were also flowing above the danger mark.

The NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army and Indian Air Force have been engaged in rescue operations. The Indian Army has intensified flood relief operations in Upper Assam under Operation Jal Rahat and has rescued more than 200 stranded civilians so far.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, ‘The recent #AssamFloods, caused by the cloudburst upstream, have brought immense hardship to our people. Tomorrow I will be visiting flood-affected areas and relief camps in Charaideo, Nazira, Sivasagar, Sonari, Jorhat and Teok to review the relief operations.’

‘We are grateful to our Army, Air Force, NDRF and all other security personnel who are leaving no stone unturned to bring people to safety,’ Sarma said.
