At least four people have died and five others remain missing after massive landslides triggered by extreme weather conditions struck Nagaland’s Mon district on Sunday. The landslides have caused widespread damage to houses and infrastructure across several districts of the State.
According to Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority Secretary Sentiwapang Aier, the bodies of four victims, including three women and one man, have been recovered, while search operations are underway to trace the five missing persons. Several people were also injured in Naginimora following the landslides.
Search and rescue operations are being carried out by the District Administration, District Disaster Management Authority, State Disaster Response Force, Nagaland Police, Assam Rifles, and local volunteers. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, through the State Emergency Operations Centre, is closely monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating with district authorities.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed grief over the tragedy, offering heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones. The State government will provide immediate ex-gratia assistance to the families of those who lost their lives and extend relief to all affected by the disaster.
Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav also expressed deep sorrow over the incident, conveying his condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the eternal peace of the departed souls. He appreciated the efforts of the District Administration, NSDMA, SDRF, Nagaland Police, Assam Rifles, medical personnel, and other agencies involved in the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
The Governor urged people to remain vigilant and follow official advisories amid the continuing adverse weather, with his thoughts and prayers being with the people of Mon district and all those affected by the severe weather conditions across Nagaland.
