The All Puroik Youth Association (APYA) has sought an independent inquiry into the functioning of the Puroik Autonomous Board, citing irregularities in the implementation of welfare schemes and a lack of transparency in the approval of development proposals.
Addressing a press conference at the Arunachal Press Club on Thursday, All Bichom District Puroik Youth Association president Rasam Rojo stated that the Association had submitted a representation to the chief secretary on 15 July, seeking an inquiry into alleged unauthorized collection of money from beneficiaries in connection with welfare schemes implemented through the Board.
Rojo acknowledged the state government’s decision to constitute the Puroik Autonomous Board in 2017 as an important step towards the welfare and development of the Puroik community. However, he alleged that several villages had remained deprived of development benefits despite the Board’s existence. The Puroik community is spread across seven districts, and available funds under the Board should be allocated based on the developmental needs of villages, including requirements related to community infrastructure, drinking water, and other basic facilities.
Rojo claimed that some beneficiaries were asked to pay money for approval of projects, and the Association had found no government provision authorizing such collections. He urged an inquiry before the finalization of welfare schemes and denied allegations that he had interfered with an official board meeting on 15 July, stating that he had visited the department for another matter and had no intention of disrupting any proceedings.
Rojo further alleged that a later confrontation took place at his residence, claiming that he was assaulted. He said an FIR had been lodged with the police, and supporting evidence would be submitted to the investigating authorities. The Association has demanded that the present members of the Puroik Autonomous Board should not be re-appointed after their tenure ends in November 2026, urging the government to constitute the next Board after consultations with recognized Puroik organizations to ensure wider community representation.
Rojo appealed to community members not to pay any money demanded for approval of welfare schemes and requested those who had already made such payments to seek refunds while urging the government to investigate the allegations.
