Nagaland observes World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2026 was observed across Nagaland on October 10 under the theme Pain Management: An Essential Part of Palliative Care. The event at St. Joseph Pain and Palliative Care Centre in Chümoukedima was chaired by O. Lossi Koso, ADC and Executive Officer of the Chümoukedima Town Council, with T. Lemlila Sangtam as a special guest. Invocation was delivered by James Vizo and benediction by Rev. Fr. Sunny of St. Joseph University, while students from the university’s Education Department performed a song.

Basu Damani, president of Lions Club Dimapur and state vice president of BJP Nagaland, highlighted the role of healthcare in relieving suffering and announced a donation of a new television. Rotary Club Dimapur contributed two lockers, an adjustable bed and two hospital beds. A&D Company of Dimapur, with support from the SELCO Foundation, carried out a free solarisation of the centre.

The centre currently cares for 14 patients and has served 123 patients since its inception. It has provided home‑based care to 175 patients, end‑of‑life care to 33 patients, and day‑care services to eight patients. Outreach programmes have reached 19,351 people across 70 villages, churches, schools and colleges. Additionally, 22 schools and colleges have sent students for internships, giving practical exposure to 804 students in palliative and community care.

Meanwhile, the District Health Society in Mon visited the John 3:16 Society Mon Senior Citizen Old Age Home, where 20 elderly women received medical attention, including general health check‑ups, blood‑sugar testing, dental examinations and mental‑health counselling. The visit also encouraged residents to enrol in Aadhaar and Ayushman schemes for better access to healthcare benefits.
