At least four people were killed and three others injured in fresh violence in Manipur’s Kamjong district, according to police sources. The dead included three suspected cadres of the Kuki National Army (Burma) and a civilian woman.
Gunfire was first reported at about 9 p.m. on Friday in the Chassad area. Kuki women from Chassad staged a protest against the detention of a group of youths by personnel of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) deployed in Kamjong. A scuffle between security forces and protesters led to firing, leaving protester Domkhonei Touthang injured; she later died from her wounds.
Early on Saturday morning a gunfight in Chassad left three suspected KNA (B) cadres dead and three others wounded, who were taken to Kamjong District Hospital for treatment. The Kuki Human Rights Forum (KHRF) condemned the woman’s killing, called for a time‑bound judicial inquiry, the arrest of the IRB personnel involved, the immediate release of the detained youths and the deployment of neutral central forces in Kuki areas.
More than ten houses belonging to Kuki and Tangkhul families were reportedly burnt down during the violence, and intense firing continued at the time of reporting. The situation remained tense amid reports of a gun attack on Ningchou, a Tangkhul Naga village near the India‑Myanmar border, allegedly by suspected KNA (B) cadres. No official statement had been issued by the state police or central security agencies as of the filing of this report.
