Former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Belgium’s Elise Mertens secured spots in the China Open quarterfinals after decisive fourth‑round victories in Beijing.
Swiatek, a six‑time Grand Slam champion, dominated 18‑year‑old American Iva Jovic 6‑1, 6‑3 in their first career meeting. The Polish star won the opening set in just over an hour, taking the first five games before Jovic managed a single game and saved two set points. In the second set, Jovic briefly challenged Swiatek, reaching a 3‑2 lead after saving two break points, but Swiatek broke twice in succession to close the match in straight sets. The win ended Jovic’s six‑match winning streak and advanced Swiatek further in one of the WTA Tour’s premier hard‑court events.
Mertens produced a tournament‑shocking upset by defeating third seed Coco Gauff 6‑3, 6‑3. The Belgian, who had lost all five of her previous meetings against Gauff, displayed consistency and composure, winning 10 of her final 11 service points and sealing the win with an ace. Gauff committed 34 unforced errors and eight double faults, and admitted to feeling low on energy in the second set. This victory marks Mertens’ 10th career win over a Top 5 player and her second such success this season.
With Swiatek’s victory over Jovic and Mertens’ triumph over Gauff, both players will meet in the quarterfinals. The match will determine who advances to the semifinals and one step closer to the China Open title. The winner will carry the momentum of a strong tournament run into the next round of this high‑profile hard‑court event.
