Women Make Up 43% of India's Ayush Services Workforce

Women make up 43% of the workforce in India’s Ayush services sector, a new government assessment released on October 8, 2026, showed. In several organised subsectors, female representation exceeds 50%, with spas and wellness resorts at more than 60%, educational institutions at 58%, day‑care centres at 57%, and hospitals at 53%. The report, issued on Ayurveda Day 2026, was prepared by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) and estimates that the sector supports 1.76 million livelihoods across healthcare, wellness, education and allied services.

The Ayush sector, which includes Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa‑Rigpa and Homoeopathy, was valued at $36.92 billion for 2024‑25 and has grown at a compound annual rate of 16.91% since 2022‑23. Standalone clinics dominate the market, generating $16.21 billion or 43.9% of total revenue, while day‑care centres contribute $10.13 billion. Together, the two segments account for more than 70% of sector earnings. Ayurveda alone accounts for $17.73 billion, roughly 48% of total services revenue.

The wellness segment has seen a compound annual growth rate of 21.29%, and yoga centres have recorded a 75% revenue increase over two years. Ayush‑related medical value travel generated $1.77 billion in 2024‑25; although international patients represent only about 5% of overall patient volumes, they contribute 15–25% of hospital‑segment revenue, with typical stays lasting five to eleven days.

The assessment projects the Ayush services economy could reach between $216 billion and $318 billion by 2047. Union Minister of State for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav said the sector’s expansion is creating jobs across healthcare, wellness, education, medical travel, research and digital health, and is opening opportunities for entrepreneurship and increased women’s participation.
