Thane police announced on Thursday the formation of a Special Investigation Team to probe the murder of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Pradeep Purnekar.
Purnekar was shot and stabbed on the night of Tuesday while inside the limits of Kapurbawdi police station. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he died during emergency treatment.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav said that one suspect has been arrested and two vehicles linked to the crime have been seized. The 23‑member SIT, led by Anti‑Extortion Cell senior inspector Sailesh Salvi, includes senior inspectors Gorakhnath Gharge and Janardhan Sonawane, with Crime Branch ACPs Vinay Ghorpade and Shekhar Bagde overseeing the operation.
All angles of the case are being probed, Joint Commissioner of Police Dyaneshwar Chavan told PTI. The police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act for murder and related offences.
