In Chandigarh, Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh announced that the BJP has set December 31, 2029 as a target to eradicate the synthetic drug trade from Punjab if the party secures a majority in the 2027 state elections.
Chugh said a BJP government would take stringent measures to dismantle the drug network, ensuring traffickers are prosecuted and imprisoned under existing laws. He highlighted the party’s 13‑day ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, which covered roughly 4,000 kilometres and visited 117 assembly constituencies, as part of its commitment to the cause.
The MP also met families of addicts, noting that the suffering of households reflects the broader social impact of drug abuse. He stressed that protecting Punjab’s youth from drugs is not only a law‑and‑order issue but also crucial for the state’s social and economic future.
Chugh emphasized that the BJP’s strategy would target the entire supply chain, from trafficking networks to distribution systems, and called for the establishment of a Narcotics Control Bureau office in Punjab. He referenced the nationwide action against more than 5,000 people under the PIT‑NDPS framework and questioned the effectiveness of the law’s application in the state.
He concluded that a drug‑free Punjab must go hand in hand with job creation, resolution of farmers’ concerns, industrial development and fiscal improvement. According to Chugh, only when youth are free from drugs and linked to education, employment, sports and entrepreneurship can the state’s development truly accelerate.
