A Mukkam police officer took two youths into custody on Wednesday after they allegedly intercepted and attacked a private bus on the Edavanna‑Koyilandy State Highway.
The incident took place at about 4.40 p.m. near Poolappoyil. The bus, bound from Manjeri to Omasery via Mukkam, was carrying several passengers, including students. Witnesses and the driver say the youths, who were reportedly intoxicated, tried to stop the bus at Agastyamuzhi by signalling to the driver. The driver refused, citing the steep and winding road, and the bus continued.
The youths then followed the bus on a motorcycle and positioned it across the road at Poolappoyil, forcing the bus to halt. They smashed a glass panel of the bus door and entered the vehicle, assaulting the driver and other occupants. One of the attackers sustained a hand injury while breaking the glass.
Local residents and bus staff restrained the attackers until a team from the Mukkam police station arrived. The police took the two youths into custody and the case is now under investigation.
