Cloth tag helps Bengaluru police identify 20-day-old decomposed body of murdered woman

Bengaluru police arrested a 32‑year‑old man, Sagar Chandra Rawat, in connection with the murder of his wife, Anusuya Behara, 28, after a body was discovered in a vacant site in Agrahara Layout on September 2. The body, heavily decomposed, had been found wrapped in a bed and tied with a rope at site No. 294 during a citywide clean‑up drive.

Investigators say the couple had been living in a rented house near Sampigehalli when a financial dispute on August 11 led Rawat to strangulate his wife. He allegedly kept the body in the house for three days before dumping it on August 16 at a nearby vacant plot, choosing the location because of thick vegetation that would conceal the remains. After disposing of the body, Rawat left the house and began staying at the hotel where he worked.

The discovery prompted a thorough probe. Police photographed the victim’s clothing, a pendant, and bangles, but identification was difficult due to the body’s advanced decomposition. A breakthrough came when a tag on her clothing was traced to a shopping complex in Bhubaneswar. By scanning the tag and gathering sales details, investigators confirmed the woman’s identity and arrested Rawat.

The case has been filed under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Anusuya’s family has identified the deceased, and police will conduct a DNA test to confirm her identity before proceeding with further legal action.
