JD(S) leader and Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy called on Election Commission of India (ECI) to explain the reported disagreements among its top officials, saying the matter must be clarified for the public’s confidence in the institution. Speaking on Saturday, Kumaraswamy responded to a question about Congress protests, alleging that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had taken several decisions unilaterally, even when the other two Election Commissioners objected.
“What is the reason for these differences? What is the truth behind the developments?” the minister asked. He stressed that the issue was not about giving weight to the protests staged by political parties but about understanding why such an atmosphere had arisen. Kumaraswamy urged the ECI to present the facts to the people and protect the dignity of the institution.
The ECI, he said, is a responsible constitutional body that has played an important role in sustaining democracy in the country over the past 78 years.
