The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner G.S. Sameeran announced that the storm‑water drain work on Kaliyamman Koil Street, where it meets the Virugambakkam canal, will be finished within two weeks. The announcement was made during an inspection on Sunday.
Mr. Sameeran inspected the development works underway at the Virugambakkam canal in the Kodambakkam zone, which are estimated to cost ₹30 crore. The project includes construction of retaining walls, fencing, and removal of silt and waste.
He also inspected the construction of a bridge across the canal by Chennai Metro Rail Limited, which is estimated to cost ₹12 crore. The existing bridge is being removed as part of the work, and officials were instructed to complete the new bridge before the Northeast monsoon.
The Virugambakkam waterway canal begins at Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, passes through Chinmaya Nagar, Saligramam and M.M.D.A. Colony, and joins the Cooum. It is 6.70 km long and 8–25 m wide. Mr. Sameeran also inspected dengue‑prevention measures in the Kodambakkam zone, visited the MGR canal, reviewed mosquito‑control spraying, and conducted a door‑to‑door field inspection on 2nd Sector, 13th Street. The Commissioner distributed awareness pamphlets, advising residents to prevent water stagnation, remove unwanted items, maintain cleanliness, and seek immediate medical treatment if fever develops.
