Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will launch the Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam on Monday in Madurai, where the government will hand out one‑gram, 22‑carat gold rings to newborns delivered in state‑run hospitals.
Under the scheme, mothers must be permanent residents of Tamil Nadu and the infants must be registered in the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system with a Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID. Each eligible baby receives a ring with a unique serial number, packaged in tamper‑proof containers, upon discharge from the hospital.
The state has earmarked Rs 755.83 crore annually for the program. In the first phase, 1.28 lakh rings have been produced, and work orders have been issued to Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers. A Government Order dated 23 June 2026 formalised the scheme, and a specialised monitoring committee headed by the district collector will oversee local implementation, inventory tracking and transparency.
The initiative follows the state’s record of 7.80 lakh births annually, with 99.9 % occurring in health facilities and 53 % in government hospitals. The government says the scheme will strengthen public trust in healthcare services and encourage safe delivery practices. After the inauguration, Vijay will open the renovated Gandhi Memorial Museum and is expected to visit the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai.
