Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann approved the direct recruitment of 450 assistant sub‑inspectors (ASIs) during a meeting to review the Home Department’s functioning. The move aims to give educated youth a chance to join the police through a transparent, merit‑based selection process while increasing manpower for more effective policing.
Mann stressed that an efficient, responsive and adequately staffed police force is essential for maintaining law and order, combating crime and ensuring public safety. He said strengthening the police is a key priority for the state government.
Punjab Police has a sanctioned strength of 6,810 ASI posts across five cadres, including district police, armed police, the bureau of investigation, intelligence and technical support service. After a detailed assessment of existing and likely vacancies, Mann explained that about 70 % of vacancies in four cadres and roughly 90 % in the Armed Cadre will be filled by promotion. Accounting for these needs, the government has cleared the direct recruitment of 450 ASIs.
The chief minister urged senior officers to maintain close coordination and ensure the recruitment process proceeds without unnecessary delay. He added that a stronger police force will improve grassroots policing and enable the department to respond more effectively to emerging law‑and‑order and security challenges.
