President Donald Trump will meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during his upcoming visit to the city for the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting is scheduled for Monday at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence, according to Anna Bahr, Mamdani’s communications director.
Bahr said the two will discuss key matters affecting the city and its residents. The White House declined to provide additional details.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary before winning the general election in November, has often been a political foil for Republicans. Trump has repeatedly expressed warmth toward the mayor, noting that the then-mayor‑elect would “surprise some conservative people” in a White House statement. This was despite the president’s 2025 campaign branding Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic.”
In a February sit‑down, Mamdani presented Trump with a mock New York Daily News front page reading “Trump to City: Let’s Build,” a reference to the 1975 headline “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD” that recalled President Gerald Ford’s promise to veto financial aid to the city. The gift was intended to signal the positive reception that new federal housing investments could generate across New York City.
