President Donald Trump said Sunday that the massive arch he wants to build between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery would become a “top grade military complex” able to host drones and snipers while storing ammunition.
The 250‑foot‑tall (76‑meter) memorial arch, proposed for a circle adjacent to the Memorial Bridge, was approved at the “strong request” of the military, Trump said in a social media post. He said the structure would be converted into a top‑grade military complex/tri‑umphal arch that could house, store, and rapidly deploy large numbers of drones and snipers on both the roof and plaza areas, and also hold large quantities of sniper ammunition.
The arch is one of several projects that the Republican president is pursuing to leave his lasting imprint on Washington. Other projects include a new White House ballroom, which he has dubbed a “military complex,” and plans to rename and renovate the Kennedy Center, refurbish the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and rebuild a golf course in East Potomac Park that could reduce public access to running and biking paths.
