President Donald Trump has said that his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., reimbursed Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev for a lavish wedding celebration held in the Bahamas. A ProPublica report revealed that Kremlev, head of the International Boxing Association and close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multi‑day party on two private islands in May to celebrate Trump Jr.’s marriage to socialite Bettina Anderson.
The expenses included renting a private island at an estimated $100,000 per night and a fireworks display costing about $70,000. Representative Robert Garcia, chair of the House Oversight Committee, questioned the transaction on X, asking what Kremlev received in return. Trump told reporters that the gift was “totally allowed” and that his son had paid the oligarch back.
Trump Jr. and Anderson issued a joint statement describing the wedding as a private ceremony attended only by family, followed by a “fun weekend with friends.” They thanked Kremlev for hosting two nights of celebrations after the wedding, emphasizing that the generosity had no political motive.
Kremlev’s press office said the oligarch had never discussed politics with his American friends. Representative Garcia has requested information from the White House about any ties between Trump Jr. and Kremlev, while Attorney General Todd Blanche declined to comment on whether an investigation would be launched. The matter has raised concerns about potential foreign influence and pay‑to‑play schemes involving the Trump family.
