The United States has been engaged in a war in Iran for over 200 days, with at least 18 American service members killed and more than 750 wounded. The conflict has also taken a heavy toll on Iranian civilians, with thousands killed, and it is estimated to cost taxpayers $246 million a day, or billions each month. Despite the escalating costs and the growing list of American casualties, congressional Republicans have not held a single standalone hearing to question administration officials or military leaders about the war’s expenses or an exit strategy, even as Democrats demand greater transparency.
The lack of oversight is stark when compared with the congressional response to the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. That incident triggered at least 10 investigations, more than two dozen hearings, and a special select committee that released a final report in June 2016. In contrast, no dedicated public hearings have been convened about the Iran war, and internal Pentagon probes into civilian deaths have largely been dissolved.
A new Congressional Budget Office estimate places the cost of the Iran conflict at roughly $38 billion, with an additional $2–3 billion projected each month. The report notes that most of the expense comes from replacing missiles and munitions, with billions spent on increased flight hours and fuel. It also warns that the war has consumed up to two‑thirds of the nation’s missile‑defense interceptors since June 2025, leaving inventories depleted for years and potentially requiring five years to rebuild.
Senate and House Democrats have criticized the administration’s conduct. Rep. Adam Smith said the CBO figures reveal a “staggering toll” in lives and taxpayer dollars, while Sen. Jack Reed called the war a “foreign policy failure of historic consequence.” Rep. Gregory Meeks added that Republicans are “serving as Donald Trump’s rubber stamp” instead of exercising their constitutional oversight duty. The Independent has requested a response from the Pentagon.
