A violent attack occurred at a school in central Sweden on Friday, resulting in the death of one person and serious injuries to two others. The incident took place at the Brinell School in the city of Fagersta, where approximately 400 to 500 students were in attendance. According to police, the suspect, an 18-year-old wielding a sword, was arrested at the scene.
The suspect, who was wearing a helmet during the attack, was apprehended after shots were fired during the arrest, as reported by the TT news agency. Upon entering the school, police found one victim deceased. The motive behind the attack remains unknown at this time.
Police Chief Tommy Alriksson stated that there is currently no reason to believe that multiple perpetrators were involved in the attack. An investigation is ongoing, with police reviewing available camera footage to gather more information. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his condolences on social media, stating that the police are working intensively to determine the cause behind the act.
In response to the incident, the Fagersta city government established a crisis center in a nearby sports hall, where affected individuals can receive support. The Vastmanland county government reported that many people were affected by the attack and that police, fire services, and healthcare workers are providing care. As a precautionary measure, several nearby schools were placed on lockdown, and roadblocks were set up by authorities.
This incident comes after a school attack in Orebro, central Sweden, in February last year, which resulted in the deaths of 10 people and is considered the worst mass shooting in Swedish history.
