Right-wing group assaults tourist at Pune fort over girl's shorts

A disturbing incident of moral policing has been reported at the historic Sinhagad fort near Pune city, where a tourist was allegedly assaulted by members of a right-wing group over his friend’s young daughter wearing shorts. The altercation took place on Monday, August 17, 2026, near the samadhi (memorial) of Tanaji Malusare, a legendary military commander and trusted companion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, on the fort. According to the police, a group of members of the right-wing outfit took objection to the girl’s attire, which led to a heated argument with the complainant.

The argument escalated, and the complainant was allegedly assaulted by the group members. Furthermore, the group also allegedly misbehaved with another couple who were present at the scene. The police have stated that the group attempted to resort to moral policing, taking the law into their own hands.

The complainant later approached the police and filed a complaint, following which an FIR was registered against eight members of the outfit. Inspector Rajesh Ramaghare of the Haveli police station confirmed the incident and stated that the police are investigating the matter.
