A six-year-old Upper Kindergarten student, Tammana Pranay Tej, died after allegedly being subjected to corporal punishment and harassment by a teacher at a school in Visakhapatnam. The incident occurred on Thursday under the One Town police station limits in the city. CCTV footage from the classroom showed the teacher scolding the student over his behavior, slapping him, and attempting to strip him, after which the boy collapsed in front of the teacher.
The incident sparked widespread outrage among parents and local communities, prompting residents and student bodies to stage protests outside the Little Garden School and the KGH Hospital, where the post-mortem was held. Protesters held the school management accountable for the incident and demanded the immediate cancellation of the school’s recognition, as well as stricter enforcement of laws to curb corporal punishment in private schools. Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education and Information Technology Nara Lokesh expressed deep anguish over the tragedy, condemning the incident and assuring swift action against those at fault.
Mr. Lokesh stated that the government would stand by the family and take strict legal action against those responsible and the school management. The One Town police are investigating the case, registering a complaint under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Act. The police will proceed accordingly after completing their investigation.
