A Ukrainian drone crashed into a busy beach near the Black Sea town of Gelendzhik, in the Krasnodar region of Russia, killing seven people, including three children, and injuring 40 others. The incident occurred on Monday at the holiday village of Arkhipo-Osipovka, part of the wider Gelendzhik resort area. Russia claimed it was a deliberate attack by Ukraine, but Ukraine has not claimed responsibility, and there is currently no evidence to suggest civilians were targeted.
The incident comes as Ukraine ramps up its long-range attacks on Moscow, seeking to increase pressure on Vladimir Putin to end the four-and-a-half-year war. Kyiv has reiterated that it does not deliberately target civilians, a claim also made by Moscow despite its attacks frequently focusing on major cities and civilian infrastructure. Verified social media footage shows the moment the drone veered towards the beach before slamming into it, causing a large explosion and sending people fleeing from the water.
Russian officials reported that 21 people, including three children, were hospitalized, with nine in a serious condition following the explosion. Tourists and residents described the chaos, with one holidaymaker stating, ‘We covered ourselves with sun loungers, and didn’t see where it exploded.’ Another parent expressed concern for their child’s well-being, saying, ‘This all happened in front of my children. My child is having a nervous breakdown.’ Russian officials have condemned the incident, with Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, describing it as a tragedy and a deliberate attack by the Kyiv regime on the civilian population.
However, it remains unclear whether the incident has been used to spread misleading claims, as Russia frequently makes baseless accusations against Ukraine. Possible explanations for the incident include a deliberate strike by Ukraine or the drone being jammed by Russia’s electronic warfare. Ukrainian Telegram channels have suggested the latter, while Russian media outlet Astra reported eyewitness footage suggesting air-defence activity by Russian forces could have been the cause of the drone crashing.
Kyiv is yet to provide an official response to the drone strike, but has previously reiterated that it does not attempt to harm civilians. The Ukrainian military has stepped up long-range attacks deep into Russia in recent months, mainly targeting oil refineries and e-commerce warehouses, a campaign likely to increase the frequency of such tragedies.
