Trump Hints at Presidential Run Despite Constitutional Barriers

Donald Trump hinted he will run for president again during a speech at the White House correspondents’ dinner on Friday (24 July). Trump told reporters: ‘I’m pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States.’ He then brought out a ‘Trump 2028’ red cap and put it on. Trump has continually made comments hinting at a third term in office, but an amendment to the Constitution prohibits anyone from serving for more than two terms.

Trump’s comments about running for office again are likely to be seen as a further indication of his intentions to remain in politics, despite the constitutional barrier. In his speech, Trump also made jokes about various politicians, including Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, whom he insinuated was sleeping with her brother and implied was stupid. He also attacked former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Congressman Jerry Nadler, making jokes about their weights.

Additionally, Trump made a sex joke that he had to explain to the audience. The White House correspondents’ dinner is an annual event that brings together politicians, journalists, and celebrities. It is traditionally a lighthearted occasion, but Trump’s speech was seen as more divisive than usual.

Trump’s speech at the White House correspondents’ dinner was met with criticism from some viewers, who described it as ‘awkward’ and ‘bitter.’ One viewer called into CSPAN, saying: ‘I was laughing for the wrong reasons. It was so bad. The world is watching this speech and I’m embarrassed for America that we have somebody that is so bitter about being treated unfairly and complaining about all these hurts that are done to him because he’s so wonderful and perfect in everything that he does.’ Another viewer, who identified himself as a Republican, told CSPAN: ‘I thought the president was terrible.’ He said the speech was disappointing to watch because Trump is representing the U.S. to the world, and noted that no matter the audience or context, the president always treats others in a ‘despicable’ way.
