Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan has requested Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to investigate alleged financial irregularities at the Hospital Development Society of the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College. The request comes after a 2021 audit report revealed discrepancies amounting to ₹46 lakh.
The audit report, which was submitted to the government by the Medical College’s Medical Superintendent, pointed to serious lapses in financial management. It found that daily revenue from the hospital’s lab, MRI scan, and ultrasound scan sections was recorded in the ledger but not deposited in the bank, indicating possible misappropriation of funds.
The report also highlighted shortcomings in the maintenance and scrutiny of accounts, a lack of clarity regarding investments, and failure to deduct statutory taxes from payments made to contractors and service providers. In light of these findings, Minister Muraleedharan has called for a detailed investigation to establish the facts and bring those responsible to book.
In his letter to the Home Minister, Muraleedharan stated that the case should be handed over to an appropriate agency for a comprehensive investigation. He also recommended that legal action, including the registration of a criminal case, be initiated based on the facts of the case.
The investigation aims to uncover the truth behind the alleged financial irregularities and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The Minister’s decision to seek a probe reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in public institutions.
