Rahul Gandhi was detained by Delhi Police at Barakhamba Road police station during the INDIA bloc protest march toward Jantar Mantar. He was released later that evening and returned to his home, but the protest continued with opposition leaders still blocked from the designated site.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and TMC MP Mahua Moitra were brought to Chhatrasal Stadium after being stopped by police. Other opposition figures detained included Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress MP K.C. Venugopal. Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan was also detained at Barakhamba police station while en route to Jantar Mantar.
The protest was aimed at demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Protesters also raised concerns about alleged vote theft and the Supreme Court’s review of the law governing the appointment of the CEC.
Delhi Police used buses to move MPs, and several were taken away during the night. Despite the detentions, opposition leaders continued to assert their right to protest peacefully at the designated site.
