Ukraine launched more than 650 drones overnight toward the Moscow region, the largest aerial assault on the Russian capital in the past two years, according to Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin. The attack was described by Russian state media as the biggest on the region in two years, with the air defence system reporting 105 drones were shot down.
The strike targeted a major oil facility, with a fire reported at the Volodarsk Linear Production and Dispatch Centre near the village of Konstantinovo. At least one person died and another was injured in the Moscow region, while Ukrainian officials said the attack had caused a fire at the oil complex.
Ukraine has said it has neutralised more than half of Russia’s oil refining capacity with long‑range strikes deep into Russian territory. In addition to drones, the country’s air force announced the deployment of AI‑enabled robotic turrets on bridges to intercept Russian jet‑powered drones, a technology that uses optical vision and artificial intelligence to eliminate the human factor.
The attack comes amid continued Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, despite repeated requests from US President Donald Trump to stop. Other incidents reported include Russian bombs killing six people in Kharkiv, a Ukrainian drone strike killing three in Zaporizhzhia, and a fire on a Romanian ship blamed on Russian drones. Fuel shipments from South Korean ports to Russia were also noted, with 176,000 tonnes of fuel loaded on seven tankers between July and August.
