A 47‑year‑old government hospital surgeon in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide after shooting himself with a licensed revolver at his apartment, police said on Monday.
Sandeep Singh, a general surgeon posted at a community health centre in Kanpur Dehat, allegedly shot himself in the chest at Blossom Apartment in Nirala Nagar on Sunday. After the gunshot, his wife Kanchan rushed into the room and found him lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Family members carried him to Regency Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, the police commissioner confirmed.
Police believe a marital dispute was the main motive, noting that the couple had fought before Singh took the extreme step. A detailed investigation will be conducted, the commissioner added, and any new findings will be shared with the media. The deputy commissioner of police said the forensic team seized the revolver and the body was sent for post‑mortem examination.
According to Singh’s father, Raj Bahadur Singh, the son had spoken to him around 9.30 pm on Sunday and later had an argument with his wife before taking the revolver into the room. The family said he went to the prayer room and then shot himself while sitting in front of the shrine. Singh had married twice: his first marriage in 2007 ended in divorce in 2018, and he married Kanchan in 2019. He completed his MBBS in 2006 and an MS in 2010, worked at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital for nine years, then was posted to Kannauj and later to a CHC in Kanpur Dehat where he had served for about a year and a half.
