President Donald Trump added the $3.2 billion Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project in Alabama to a growing list of infrastructure he hopes to see named after him. During a rally in Mobile on Friday night, the former president celebrated the groundbreaking of the new I‑10 corridor and bridge, crediting the Trump administration for the $3 billion in funding that made the project possible. He joked that the bridge might eventually bear his name and expressed willingness to accept it.
The bridge will be financed primarily through a $2.52 billion Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan to state authorities, announced by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy last month. In addition, the Biden administration awarded a $550 million grant in July 2024, which was finalized under the Trump administration in May 2025. Representative Shomari Figures, an Alabama Democrat, acknowledged both administrations’ contributions at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Trump’s comments come amid a broader controversy over his name on public sites. Earlier this year, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., was renamed in his honor after a board vote, but a federal judge ordered the removal of his name in May, citing congressional authority. In July, Palm Beach International Airport was renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport under a Florida law. Reports that the White House sought to place his name on Ford’s Theatre in Washington were dismissed by Trump as “fake news.”
While speaking in Mobile, Trump praised the state, noting his electoral victories there and claiming the highest vote total of any candidate in Alabama history. He announced plans to return next Saturday to watch a Georgia‑Alabama football game, underscoring his continued engagement with the state’s political landscape.
