A former senior employee of the National Gallery of Victoria has been accused of funneling $8 million from the museum over a six‑year period, according to AAP. The allegation is that the man used an NGV account to purchase mobile phones worth approximately $8 million, which he then sold for personal gain.
The Independent Broad‑based Anti‑corruption Commission (IBAC) has charged the former employee with eight offences, including seven counts of theft and one count of misconduct in public office. The alleged misconduct is said to have taken place between September 2019 and September 2025. He is expected to appear before Melbourne magistrates’ court on 20 October.
Meanwhile, money markets are pricing in a 90 % chance that the Reserve Bank of Australia will raise interest rates next Tuesday. The surprise rise in unemployment to 4.6 % in August would normally reduce the likelihood of a hike, but the data also showed hiring increased, prompting banks and analysts to maintain their forecasts for a rise from 4.35 % to 4.6 %.
Other developments include the death of a 50‑year‑old man in the water off Marley Beach in the Royal National Park, where emergency services and a helicopter rescue operation were deployed. Police also reported a decline in Victoria’s crime rate, with offences falling by almost 4 % in the past year, while drug‑related offences and retail theft rose.
