A child died in a stabbing attack in the Blue Mountains, with two other children and a woman in critical condition, New South Wales police say.
In a statement issued Sunday afternoon, police reported that emergency services responded to a vehicle on Waratah Road, Valley Heights, where three children and a woman were found with stab wounds. Officers noted that several members of the public had performed first aid on the victims while contacting Triple Zero.
The police said NSW Ambulance treated the two children, believed to be under five, and the woman, believed to be in her 40s, at the scene before they were transported to hospital. All three were listed as being in a critical condition, and one of the children was found dead in the vehicle.
Police established a crime scene and indicated that they were not looking for any other people at this time. At a press conference that evening, Superintendent John Nelson announced that the children and woman were undergoing surgery. He did not confirm whether the woman was the children’s mother, though she was not known to police. Nelson said the investigation was in its early stages and urged the public to contact Crime Stoppers if they had dashcam footage or other information. He also noted that officers who responded had support available to them, describing the event as a tragic circumstance for anyone exposed to it.
