Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited Malki Market in Shillong, accompanied by East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh. The market, which had been closed for 130 years, was reopened as part of a broader effort to revitalize the city’s commercial hubs.
The reopening is part of a Smart City initiative that will renovate 100 markets across Shillong. The list of markets slated for refurbishment includes 38 Laitumkhrah Shopping Complexes, 14 Laban Markets, two Lumshyiap markets, 30 Polo Markets, six vendor markets, one Khasi Market, 14 Iewduh Markets, and 24.27 Malki Market.
CM Sangma said the project will bring prosperity to the local community. Other nearby markets that will benefit from the renovations include Barik Point, Yojana Bhawan, Anjalee Point, Rhino Point, and the Civil Hospital.
The Urban Affairs Department and the appointed contractor are overseeing the work, and 75 percent of the new Secretariat’s construction will be funded by the government, according to the CM’s remarks.
