Guwahati, September 15 – The Assam Congress, led by Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, is preparing for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by‑poll scheduled for October 6, after the seat became vacant when former MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and joined the BJP.
Gogoi told reporters that the Congress is running a vigorous campaign and is confident of victory. He also alleged that the BJP has entered a secret agreement with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), led by Badruddin Ajmal, because the BJP fears a Congress win.
If AIUDF fields Ajmal as its candidate, the contest could become even tighter. Gogoi said the AIUDF had reconsidered its candidate choice after the Congress announced its nominee, suggesting that the BJP is panicking over a strong Congress challenge and is seeking AIUDF support to strengthen its position in the constituency.
The BJP has nominated former IAS officer Devasish Sharma, while the Congress has selected former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora. Nagaon has been a Congress stronghold, winning the seat in 2019 and 2024, and the by‑poll outcome is seen as a bellwether for Assam’s political climate ahead of the 2029 general election.
