External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Monday to discuss bilateral cooperation and the situation in Ukraine. The conversation, posted by Jaishankar on X, highlighted the importance of maintaining strong ties between the two democracies.
Earlier in September, the two countries held their annual Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) at New Delhi’s Hyderabad House. The Indian delegation, led by MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon, met with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Thangaraj from Global Affairs Canada. The MEA noted that the FOC reflected sustained momentum in the bilateral relationship since June 2025, underscoring shared democratic values, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a joint commitment to the rule of law.
Both sides reviewed progress in a range of institutional mechanisms, including energy and critical minerals, science and technology, education, security and defence cooperation, culture, people‑to‑people ties and consular matters. They welcomed the strengthening of institutional engagement and dialogue between the governments.
The MEA also stated that India and Canada intend to conclude Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations before year‑end, aiming to more than double bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion (INR 4.65 lakh crore) by 2030. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized opportunities for deeper financial‑sector cooperation and long‑term investment partnerships, echoing remarks made at a high‑level India‑Canada Business Roundtable in Toronto with Canadian Finance Minister Francois‑Philippe Champagne.
