The Bharatiya Janata Party has confirmed that its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by‑poll, retired IAS officer Devasish Sharma, will submit his nomination papers on September 16 at Nagaon Sadar. The filing is part of a larger campaign that began in early September, with around 50,000 BJP workers from Nagaon and Morigaon districts gathering at Dawson HS School playground before proceeding to the returning officer’s office.
Assam BJP leaders, including party president Dilip Saikia, ministers Pijush Hazarika and Jayanta Malla Baruah, and several NDA MLAs, are expected to join the procession. Organising efforts have intensified at booth, mandal and morcha levels, with the party’s Yuva, Mahila, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, OBC, Minority and Tea Tribes Morchas actively working to mobilise voters across the constituency.
In contrast, the Congress has nominated former Batadrava MLA Sivamoni Bora, a former APS officer, as its candidate. The contest will pit Bora’s political experience and grassroots connections against Sharma’s administrative background. The BJP has criticized the Congress for internal divisions, citing “lobby‑centric politics” and distrust among leaders.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Rakibul Hussain has written to the Election Commission alleging misuse of power by Sharma during his tenure as Nagaon district collector and election officer. Hussain’s complaints include accusations of politically motivated decision‑making and controversial transfer orders issued while Sharma was in office. The by‑poll, scheduled for October 6, 2026, is expected to be a key battleground in the region.
