Mizoram: Sairang railway station sees 5.54 lakh passenger movements in first year

Sairang railway station, located near Mizoram’s capital Aizawl, recorded more than 5.54 lakh passenger movements in its first year of operation, according to the Association for Protection of Indigenous People (APIB). The station handled an average of over 3,300 passengers daily, marking a significant milestone since rail connectivity was established there a year ago.

During the same period, more than 2,500 railway freight wagons were delivered, including 156 wagons carrying automobiles. Passenger services on the Bairabi‑Sairang line have shown high occupancy, with the tri‑weekly Sairang‑Kolkata train averaging over 140% occupancy, the daily Sairang‑Guwahati service consistently above 110%, and the Sairang‑Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express averaging over 145%. These services generated Rs 54 crore in ticket sales for Indian Railways.

The first cargo train arrived on 14 September 2025, carrying more than 26,000 bags of cement from the STAR Cement siding near Guwahati, which helped lower cement prices in Aizawl. In December 2025, the first automobile consignment—119 Maruti cars from Changsari—was transported by rail, offering a safer and higher‑capacity channel for vehicle movement to Mizoram and reducing logistics costs.

Around 70% of the freight wagons delivered carried construction materials such as cement, stone and sand, supporting housing and public works projects while cutting transportation time and expenses. Additional consignments included rice, fertilisers and other essential commodities, aiding agriculture and the public distribution system and shifting bulk movement away from long‑distance road journeys.

The station has become a focal point for the surrounding community, with local residents engaging in tree planting and other environmental initiatives around the complex. Railways also provide a route for Mizoram’s handloom, bamboo, cane and craft products to reach broader markets; the first parcel consignment from Sairang, booked on 19 September 2025, carried anthurium flowers to Delhi in the parcel van of the Sairang‑Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express.
