On Saturday, September 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The meeting aimed to strengthen the India‑Ethiopia strategic partnership and was held in the context of the summit’s broader multilateral agenda.
During the discussion, the two leaders reviewed progress in key sectors such as economic cooperation, defence and security partnership, and capacity building. They also examined regional and international developments of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to close cooperation in multilateral forums.
Modi expressed appreciation for Ethiopia’s participation in the summit, noting that its presence helped reinforce the collective voice of the Global South. Both leaders reiterated this collective voice and exchanged perspectives on matters of common concern.
Ethiopia expressed a keen interest in deeper defence cooperation and welcomed Indian industry and investment, particularly from mining companies. The meeting followed Ethiopia’s visit to India earlier in the year, during which Modi addressed a joint parliamentary session, visited the Adwa Museum, and was awarded the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia.
