VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit warned on Friday that the BJP’s ideological ties with the RSS should not be ignored amid reports that eight UDP legislators are ready to switch sides if their demands are met.
Basaiawmoit said the BJP’s agenda is clear: it seeks to weaken other parties, including Congress and regional outfits, and will pursue its own political goals regardless of the circumstances.
He emphasized that the VPP’s own mission is to deliver clean governance, genuine development and to protect the distinct identity and interests of Meghalaya’s indigenous peoples.
The president cautioned that the entry of individual leaders into the BJP would not change the party’s core ideology, and warned that BJP rule could have serious consequences for a small indigenous population. He questioned whether voters could hold a BJP‑led government accountable in a Christian‑majority state.
Ultimately, Basaiawmoit said the responsibility lies with the people to assess the political developments and decide whether to grant the BJP a mandate, urging them to view the UDP’s potential switch as part of a larger ideological agenda that could affect Meghalaya’s future.
