United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, which will take place over the weekend. The Ministry of External Affairs said his visit underscores the shared commitment of BRICS partners to multilateralism and constructive dialogue in promoting peace, development and international cooperation.
This is Guterres’s fifth visit to India and the second this year, following his participation in the AI Action Summit in February. He was welcomed by Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar at the airport. The MEA posted on X that the visit reaffirms the BRICS partners’ shared commitment to multilateralism and constructive dialogue.
India, as the BRICS chair for 2026, will host the summit on September 12‑13. The meeting will bring together leaders of the 10 BRICS members—Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa—and partner countries including Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Guterres is expected to address the summit on themes of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability, stressing that today’s economic, demographic and geopolitical realities differ from those of 1945. He will call for reforms of multilateral institutions such as the Bretton Woods system and the Security Council to reflect the current multipolar world. A bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders is also scheduled during the summit.
