On Friday, September 11, a nationwide strike by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) disrupted banking services across India. The union, which represents about 90 percent of bank officers and employees in seven unions, demanded an immediate five‑day workweek and resolution of pending wages.
Most branches of state‑run banks were fully or partially closed as staff joined the protest. Cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque clearances and administrative work were affected at many branches, and some older private banks also reported disruptions.
Digital banking services, including UPI and internet banking, continued to function. Bank Employees Association leaders said the strike was forced on them because there had been no positive outcome and the government had not agreed to their demands. Public sector banks had alerted customers in advance about the possible impact of the nationwide strike.
The unions also seek Saturdays to be declared holidays, a change agreed in the March 2024 12th Bipartite Settlement but still pending government notification. They plan a three‑day strike from September 28 to 30 and have scheduled branch closures on September 26 and 27.
Customers are advised to plan essential branch‑based transactions, as ATMs and digital services may continue depending on cash and technical availability.
